Burning Rocks, Acid Ponds, and Toxic Waters of the Smoking Hills Long Term Impacts of Cretaceous Volcanism.

This talk examines OAE 3 recorded in the Smoking Hills Formation of Arctic Canada. High-precision U–Pb ages and volcanic ash layers suggest that Cretaceous arc volcanism may have promoted ocean fertilization, enhanced productivity, and metal enrichment. Today, these organic- and metal-rich rocks generate spontaneous combustion and hyper-acidic waters. Climate warming and permafrost thaw are accelerating these processes, increasing toxic metal transport to Arctic rivers and contributing to “river rusting.”
